I was playing around with a new lighting set up and asked my son to help me out. Let me know if this works, or the hair light is too hot.

I like the cross lighing, expecially how it lights his eyes. I think if the light had a little lower it might had brightened up the color of the eyes, but allgother weel done!

Yeah the hair light is a bit hot, but sometimes with dark hair that is necessary to get it to show up well, and I think I'd have moved it off to one side more (his left). Looks to me like it was a key light on his right side and the hair light.

The lighting set up was as follows:

3 Hensel Intergra Pro Plus 500 lights.

Camera left (subject right) at "relative power" 7 with a 40 x 60 softbox, level with subject's eyes.

Camera right (subject left) at "relative power" 5 with a 18 x 26 softbox, level with subject's eyes.

Hair light above the backdrop in the back of the subject , shooting down and towards the camera at "relative power" 10 with a 7" reflector and a 20 degree grid.

The hair light looks good, it might be a little hot. You might also increase the angle - might be a little too directly above the head. Maybe move the light back or the subject forward.

If you're using 4 lights, try setting as follows:

Meter each light separetly. Except for the hair light, you should be pointing the dome of your light meter at the camera lens. For the hair light, you should point the light meter dome directly into the light, from the top of the subject's head.

Main light @ 40 degrees at your working aprature - eg. f11

Fill light down the axis of the lens at two stops less than the main light - eg. f5.6

Hair light @ 2 stops less than working aprature - eg. f5.6

Back light at working apreture - eg. f11

Then, remeter all lights together and adjust relatively so the combined are at the working apreture - eg f11.

This is a little nit-picking because it's actually a nice shot.
